Using Telepresence to Dance Across Borders

Written by Julie M on July 9th, 2010

Where there’s a will there’s a way when it comes to true dedication. Despite a twelve hour time difference between Shanghai and New York, young dancers  are using TelePresence technology to rehearse for their National Dance Institute production of “The Red Thread” later this month in both NY and CT. This real-time collaboration has enabled the dancers to start preparations for their performance before they ever meet face-to-face.

“Both the arts and technology open people’s hearts and minds to limitless possibilities,” said Jaques d’Amboise, legendary dancer and founder of NDI. “Dance is basically a form of expression. The way we move and the timing of the movement are how we express ourselves, and Cisco TelePresence can help ensure that none of this expression is lost.”

d’Amboise goes on to say that with the help of technology, “these dancers are able to transcend physical distance to be simultaneously moved by the same beautiful piece of music and elegant movements.”

Telepresence technology has been changing the way people work, teach and learn for quite some time and it has now made its mark on the performing arts world. Thanks to the capabilities of video, these young dancers are able to stay close to their homes and families for a little longer, all while still being able to practice alongside their cross-continent counterpart.
